Week of June 17, 2008 -- To Mom
June 17, 2008
I just got my new email address; I hope you can see what it is.
This week has been a really good week; full of the spirit. I received your emails yesterday via DearElder.com. I got them yesterday because sunday isn't a mail day. I was so excited to hear from you guys. For some reason, I was feeling down when I didn't get anything from Elder Covarrubias, but then I found out he made a mistake and hearing news from you was the mostly the best thing about yesterday.
Elder Covarrubias (I hope I am spelling it right) is our district leader. El es de una ciudad en mexico y el sabe mucho espanol. He is a very good example to me. Our lideres(I know it needs an accent) de zona are also very good guys. I like them a lot. One is named Elder Myers and the other is Elder Christensen. Elder Myers is a convert but he has a strong testimony of all the principles of the gospel. Elder Christensen is just a goof full of a fun spirit.
Yes, for some reason I am in advanced Spanish. I feel like I'm the only one in my class that can't say all that he wants to say. But I'm getting better. I've been able to memorized scriptures in spanish (with the help of Elder Delgado, my companion.) I feel like this environment is the best way to learn spanish and even though I feel like I know the least, everybody needs help at some times. Our teacher are Brothers Rojas and Nelson. They are great teachers.
Saturday was the hardest day for me of the 4 first days. I had been feeling inadequate in my learning of the spanish language, and while we were studying in class, our teacher, Hermano Rojas, went to the scripture about the brother of Jared. I was touched so much by the spirit. I felt that I wasn't excercising my faith in Christ...I needed his help and to do the things that he wanted me to do and have confidence in myself. It was an awesome and overwhelming experience. It wasn't the first time I cried the first four days; I'll just leave it at that.
We've been going over the la primera leccion (con accento). We have been practicing teaching the lesson (in Spanish), aaaaahhhhhhh!!!!! It's worked out and Elder Delgado is the best at helping me when I lose myself. It's been hard because the first few times my mind has been all over the place and then it's hard to know what to say and how to put in spanish...but I've been getting better and now I am not as scared to give the first discussion in spanish.
It's been a fun first week. This is my first preparation day. I've enjoyed it so far. It was nice not having to hurry and take a shower as soon as possible to get to class on time.
Make sure you forward this to all who wants to know about what's happening to me. Send me email addresses that I should know, (but not in an email because I only have 30 minutes to check and write email). I would appreciate it if you would send me them via DearElder.com. It's faster that way, plus I don't know if I can check this at any time of the week. I'm trying to write as fast as I can becaus I only have 4 minutes left to send this.
I hope this letter is good news to you. The MTC is so much fun. I love the atmosphere.
Oh, I ran into hermana Aune the 2nd of 3rd day I was here. I haven't seen her since but she seems like an awesome person, too. She has a long way to go on her spanish, but I still can't believe she know russian.
I've also ran into a lot of other elders from our home ward, such as my President of Elders quorum, he's leaving this week for Tulsa Ok.
I can't wait to see cody, he has a lot to learn but I'm sure he'll enjoy his time. And I can't wait to see Jade as well.
1 minute, better get this letter sent.
I love you all. Take care, and take my advice about sending me letters. I should get it the same day if it as before 12pm.
Love,
Elder John Carlos Gonzales
